Two Nigerians Jailed 7 Years in Kuwait Over Armed Robbery of Currency Exchange Shop

The robbery, which occurred in January 2025, was investigated by the Kuwait General Department of Criminal Investigation in the Ahmadi Governorate. Authorities arrested the suspects after linking them to the violent theft, which involved the use of a fake firearm to intimidate employees during the operation.

According to court documents, the Public Prosecution charged the first four defendants with stealing money from the exchange shop. Prosecutors stated that the second defendant brandished a fake gun to threaten victims, while the third and fourth defendants allegedly carried out the theft with the assistance of the first defendant.

A fifth defendant was also charged with participating in the crime by helping the group conceal the stolen money and providing support after the robbery. He was accused of conspiring with the other defendants and assisting them in handling the proceeds of the crime.

On Monday, July 20, 2026, the Second Circuit of the Kuwait Court of Appeal, headed by Counselor Nasr Salem Al-Haid alongside Counselors Mutaib Al-Aradhi and Saud Al-Sane, upheld the convictions. The court affirmed prison sentences of seven years and six months for those directly involved in the robbery, while the fifth defendant received a six-month prison sentence.

The Criminal Court had earlier sentenced the first and fifth defendants in person, while the remaining defendants were tried and sentenced in absentia after failing to appear before the court.

The ruling marks the end of a high-profile robbery case that attracted significant attention in Kuwait, highlighting the country’s firm stance against violent crimes and armed robbery. Kuwaiti authorities have continued to emphasize strict enforcement of the law against criminal gangs, regardless of nationality, as part of ongoing efforts to maintain public safety and protect businesses across the country.
